Mercian Scribes
Golden Calligraphy is a multi-media exhibition showing calligraphy and lettering art. Pieces on show incorporate colour, gold and other metallic effects. The work has been produced by Mercian Scribes, a group of calligraphers based in Staffordshire. Also featured will be work by Peter Halliday HFCLAS and pieces completed by students of the Gilding and Traditional Skills Course which is offered by CLAS.
The exhibition is to be held at Wirksworth Library and will follow straight after the first week of the Wirksworth Festival. This is the second time Mercian Scribes have exhibited at Wirksworth. After the success of last years’ exhibition, it was a pleasure to be asked to return with another exhibition. Spencerian Study Group
Above flourish is by L.M. Kelchner.
Look in any modern calligraphy book and you will not find anything relating to a wonderful era of calligraphic endeavour in the United States during a seventy-five year period between 1850 and 1925. This period was awash with skilful, elegant and creative work during what has now become known as the 'Golden Age of Ornamental Penmanship'. This period included pointed pen scripts such as Spencerian Script and the more elaborate Ornamental Penmanship. Yet the top calligraphers, penmen and illustrators of the day were real experts in many other forms of the lettering arts. Their skills were such that they didn't need the engraver's tool to create perfect ovals devoid of kinks or wobbles. And believe it or not, they were equally skilled in the use of the edged pen well before Edward Johnston here in the UK was supposedly re-discovering it!!! The 75 year history surrounding the Golden Age is also of historical interest with the fascination of the master penmen themselves with their real personalities and the many art colleges and business schools where many of them taught and worked.
The Spencerian Study Group was established in 2000 with aims not only to learn and study Spencerian Script and Ornamental Penmanship, but also to use these hands and other aspects of calligraphy from that period in a creative and contemporary way. The group has a wide brief within the study of the Golden Age just as calligrahers today find inspiration within the huge legacy of the Roman alphabet. The Golden Age of Ornamental Penmanship is the study group's foundation, but then members are free to explore and develop their own calligraphic ideas. So despite its name, the group doesn't just do Spencerian Script. Having a different starting point to other calligraphy groups, we hope that what we create will be different, and being different, will be calligraphically original and interesting. Equally, studying and practising these American styles of penmanship has a knock-on effect on other calligraphic skills. Ornamental Penmanship in particular teaches beautiful movement and glide: a greater sense of touch, grace and delicacy: the skilful use of tools and materials: and a deeper appreciation of line. Copperplaters particularly would find ornamental penmanship a useful experience. Members of the group enjoy what we do because it IS different and also because it's a definite challenge to one's calligraphic skills. The SSG is now in its seventh year. The group meets twice a year in April and September, but there is also a postal group, which is a way of keeping in touch with the group and its activities.
